Question 1

How to prevent complications after ERCP?

Accepted Answer

To prevent complications after ERCP, follow post-procedure instructions diligently, stay hydrated, monitor for unusual symptoms, take prescribed medications as directed, opt for a light diet initially, and attend scheduled follow-up appointments for close monitoring and prompt intervention if needed.

Question 2

What are the success rates of ERCP?

Accepted Answer

The success rates of ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) vary depending on the specific condition being treated. Generally, the procedure has a high success rate of about 85-95%. However, the success rates may be lower in cases where there are complications or anatomical challenges. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional to assess the individual's specific situation and determine the expected success rate for their ERCP procedure.

Question 3

When to call the doctor after ERCP?

Accepted Answer

If you experience severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fever, signs of infection or any other unusual symptoms after an ERCP, it is important to call your doctor immediately. These symptoms could indicate complications such as pancreatitis, infection, or bleeding. Prompt medical attention is necessary to ensure proper treatment and prevent any further complications.

Question 4

How to relieve pain after ERCP?

Accepted Answer

To relieve pain after an ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography), it is important to follow the instructions provided by your doctor. They may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe stronger medications if necessary. Applying a heating pad or taking warm baths can also help alleviate discomfort. It is crucial to rest, avoid strenuous activities, and eat a bland diet to aid in the healing process. If the pain persists or worsens, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Question 5

What are the side effects of ERCP?

Accepted Answer

The side effects of ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) may include pancreatitis, infection, bleeding, perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, and allergic reactions to anesthesia or contrast dye. Pancreatitis is the most common complication, occurring in about 5% of cases. Remember that these side effects are rare, and the benefits of the procedure often outweigh the risks. It is crucial to discuss any concerns or potential complications with a healthcare professional before undergoing an ERCP.
