Question 1

What is the difference between EGD and endoscopy?

Accepted Answer

In medical terminology, EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) and endoscopy are often used interchangeably. However, endoscopy is a broader term that encompasses various procedures using an endoscope—a flexible tube with a light and camera. EGD specifically refers to the endoscopic procedure focused on examining the upper digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. So, while all EGDs are endoscopies, not all endoscopies are EGDs, as endoscopy can involve examining other parts of the body beyond the upper digestive system.

Question 2

Is an EGD the same as an endoscopy?

Accepted Answer

An EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is a type of endoscopy procedure that specifically examines the upper gastrointestinal tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. While an EGD is a form of endoscopy, not all endoscopies are EGDs. Endoscopy is a broader term that encompasses various procedures used to visualize different parts of the body using an endoscope, a flexible tube with a camera attached to it.
